Wind Talker

1626

During the previous night’s meal after our arrival at the homestead, I had the distinct feeling of being reunited with Phoebe, my wife. Then afterward when I met her outside, the feeling had vanished. Nothing could restrain my desire from seeing her again, but I was perplexed by what had happened. I worried that my confusion might make me seem distant for I had no wish to hurt Phoebe of any time period.

After breakfast the following morning, Phoebe’s mom herded everyone out the door, and I found myself alone with Phoebe. “There’s not much time,” I said.

She came over to me and hugged me. I gave her a kiss, after which we stood holding each other. Finally, I stepped back. No words were necessary. We should see one another in a couple of months. I stepped through the door.

Ready to leave, Silver Eagle and Sly Fox waited outside. I joined them. When we reached the gate, I waved. Phoebe kept a brave front and returned my wave. The gate closed behind us, and we started our journey to the Sekakawon. Our first stop was at the mass grave. When I saw the bones, I closed my eyes and fought the tears. To Silver Eagle, the massacre had taken place over a decade ago, but for me, the wounds remained fresh. All the same, no length of time could ever allow me to forget. Silver Eagle placed his hand on my shoulder like a father would his son. “My mother is buried here,” I said.

“I know. She died bravely, protecting her own.”

I stood there, thinking about her sacrifice. After a long while, I nodded that I was fine and took a deep breath. We returned to our trip.

The first time that I had traveled to the Sekakawon, my father and brothers had accompanied me. The event had also taken place nearly twenty years in the future. After much of the day had passed, we traveled from the territory the English had claimed as their own, since most of their settlements remained along the James River. That was a stark contrast from my first trip because they had spread to the York River as well. Like that trip, we were loaded with supplies.

Late in the afternoon, we met our first traveler, a Chiskiack warrior. Thankful for a rest break, I relished the time to catch my breath and stop and chat. As was the custom, we passed a pipe and shared the latest news and foodstuff. The main town of the Chiskiack lay up ahead, and we were welcomed to spend the night.

By the time we arrived in the Chiskiack town, dusk had fallen. Instead of the common greeting a guest normally received, no one met us. No drums sounded, and no people danced. A small circle of houses showed us that we had entered the town, but the lack of activity seemed out of character. Finally, a man with two warriors beside him approached us. He greeted us and introduced himself as weroance Ottahotin.
